How To Disassemble The MARKSMITH Ti Permanent Marker Without Stripping The Screws

There's no reason that you should need to disassemble the MARKSMITH Ti permanent marker, as it is fully serviceable and cleanable without taking it apart. Nonetheless some customers want to disassemble and take apart their MARKSMITH (most have stripped the screws attempting it), and that's perfectly fine, but it's not possible unless you first break the bond of the thread locker that was applied to the screws during the assembly process to prevent the screws from loosening and prevent the clip from getting loose. If you don't follow these instructions, it's very likely that the screw heads will get stripped.

We apply permanent thread locker (equivalent of red Loctite) to the screws during assembly. This isn't to prevent the owner from disassembling the MARKSMITH. The permanent thread locker is used to prevent the screws from coming loose and allowing the clip to become loose. It succeeds wonderfully at keeping everything tight. But the thread locker is so strong, that heat must be first applied to break down the thread locker bond before removing the screws.

SCREW REMOVAL METHOD 1

The easiest way to apply heat to break down the thread locker bond is to heat the MARKSMITH in an oven at 350-400F for about 1 hr. Remove the refill cartridge first otherwise it will melt. Then the screws should be easily removable.

SCREW REMOVAL METHOD 2

Another method is to use a soldering iron to pinpoint the heat on the screw. This works, but it's a bit more time consuming because the soldering iron tip must be held manually on the screw head long enough for the heat to conduct into the threads of the screw and break down the thread locker bond. If the screw remains difficult to remove, the heat hasn't been applied long enough.
